No one can deny the luxury of cashmere apparel. While most of it comes from China due to their large population of cashmere producing goats, some items are made in Scotland. There is something very special, luxurious and almost magical about Scottish cashmere sweaters. The cashmere goats in Scotland have been perfected by years of cross breeding with other cashmere goats from around the globe. Despite the cross breeding, the heritage of these goats goes back to the sturdy Scottish feral goat which thrives in harsh environments. These cashmere goats are herded and shorn much like sheep. The difference is that the cashmere material must be harvested via combing or shearing in the early spring which is the only time it molts. It can take anywhere from three to eight goats for one sweater.

If you are unable to travel to Scotland to buy a 100% cashmere sweater, don't worry. You can expect to pay hundreds for a premium quality sweater. When making your purchase, make sure the label says 100% cashmere and Made in Scotland. Because a cashmere sweater is a wardrobe investment that is on the delicate side, hand wash or dry clean only when necessary and fold your sweater carefully for storage.
